Dental scaling/cleaning involves removing built up plaque and calculus. Plaque is soft build up of food and bacteria and calculus (or tartar) is a hard deposit on the teeth. Both have the potential to cause gum disease so dental scaling is performed to remove both plaque and calculus as well as surface staining.
